I think there's a sticky broadcast intent for that: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/ConnectivityManager.html#CONNECTIVITY_ACTION
Although I've only ever used ConnectivityManager#getActiveNetworkInfo and then isConnectedOrConnecting on that for an immediate check...
