The OP was saying that it was a widespread problem that has been mentioned by others on IRC and Twitter... not that IRC and Twitter wouldn't work for him either...
They aren't problems with the OP's connection... there is/was a problem with the Android Market Servers (anyone surprised?) as I had seen the same behavior in the last couple days.
