Recent Eclipse/ADT builds include a new feature that enables saving the AVD state to a snapshot when it's closed, and the AVD can be restored from the snapshot very quickly. It's still considered an alpha feature, but I've been using it without any trouble. More details here: http://tools.android.com/recent/emulatorsnapshots
