One of my phones (HTC Hero) has just a little bit more RAM than your LG Optimus, and I never had any trouble developing with it.

And to repeat - killing applications and freeing RAM is something Android always does. If there is a problem with that, that would be a major screw-up by the manufacturer (firmware developer).

You might want to look for a user-oriented forum where your phone is discussed, which should be a better place to discuss specific issues affecting your device.
