Do you really mean YouTube player, or are you referring to the media player?
In any case, the emulator is using the ARM-optimized software codecs running in QEMU ARM emulation on your workstation. The performance is not going to be spectacular. On the G1, the AVC codec runs on the DSP, so the performance is better than the other video codecs.
