If you're in navigation normally, if you turn the screen off it does not lock. The screen can be turned on to go directly back to the active navigation without entering pattern/password/PIN. But when navigation is active and I got a calendar notification, the next time the screen went off it locked and my pattern/password/PIN had to be entered.
