You could I suppose implement your own algorithms... but you'd basically be making your own OpenGL implementation and reinventing the wheel.
OpenGL ES is the way to go for hardware-accelerated 3D on Android (unless you're a fan of renderscript). If you don't already know OpenGL, there are plenty of places to learn it from.
