A service can get killed too, and I don't think you'd want a foreground-class service just to update your widget.

The usual solution is to use AlarmManager, possibly combined with a service, or not.

Keep in mind that updating a widget every few seconds can be a huge battery drain, no matter how you trigger those updates.
