Some Milestones have a faulty proximity sensor, the symptoms are exactly
as you are describing.
As far as I remember, it's a hardware problem. The sensor erroneously
treats bright light as no light, and the in-call screen turns off the
screen, thinking you put the phone to your ear.
It just so happened that I had one of those defective ones, and had to
have it replaced by the store.
