Never mind...found a typo that caused everything to go wrong without causing an error message from Eclipse. But then, I'm learning not to trust Eclipse as much as it would like me to.... I typed
android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Light.WallpaperSettings" when trying to restore the "standard" but unreadable theme, and I ended up with this in my AndroidManifest file: android:theme=""@android:style/Theme.Light.WallpaperSettings"" Note how Eclipse wants to double the quotes on both sides.... Great job, Eclipse....
