Hi

Add 4 way buttons at the edges of the screen to scroll instead of
paint.

Or do as treking suggests use multifinger gestures eg; pinch to zoom
etc for scrolling and single finger for painting.

Good luck if your app needs to 'read' & interpret what the user is
doing in the rough work area...

Also you could extend finger paint to support a larger scrollable
canvas - SMOP.
