Do you get the same result if you use Rect.height() ? In the source I
see here 
http://www.java2s.com/Open-Source/Android/android-core/platform-frameworks-base/android/graphics/Rect.java.htm

/**
* @return the rectangle's height. This does not check for a valid
rectangle
* (i.e. top <= bottom) so the result may be negative.
*/
public final int height() {
       return bottom - top;
}

whereas you have top - bot and abs...
