At least they don't show > 100% active anymore, they "fixed" that a while back... LOL Glad you've got a sense of humor about this Doug... my OCD brings me to the stats page about 5 times an hour to anguish...
The "total installs" # REALLY NEEDS TO BE REAL-TIME as the "active installs" number seems to be (when it works, been issues there too). Seriously, am I missing what would be SO difficult about this??? Because of the inconsistent interval and times of the day I've seen it jump (not necessarily closely timed to new sales), it feels to me like this number is only updated after a human at Google runs a routine... this of course is conjecture and it would be nice if there was an "official" Google response of why this has dragged on for so very long and why it gets "fixed" only to get broken again. :) This complaint exists in so many discussions...
