Thanks for suggesting that it was a bug. I did a little searching and it would appear that you are correct, and in fact there are a couple of other bugs with the edittext controls. Anyway, I solved this by making the InputType TYPE_TEXT_VARIATION_PERSON_NAME. Works perfectly. So far.
