It turns out the math wasn't good enough. My approximation of distances wasn't accurate enough; I have to do a few more square roots.
With that in mind, I can space the text along the path. I haven't solved the other problem yet, but if I have several labels at intervals on a path, chances are at least one of them won't look hideous.
