Never mind. I reset the phone. My kids and I will need to re-earn a bunch of hard-won game levels, but no more harm than that.
(Still curious, though... is there some way I could have recovered the phone). Also, Google folks, there's a real bug lurking here... the phone should not have let apps steal so much memory that a reboot was impossible.
