It's been said before that Google would try to stop the fracturing and
reign in control. So far nothing has happened. I'm tired of not
being sure when my particular phone will get an OS update if it will
get one at all. This is extremely frustrating and I know I'm not the
only one that feels this way.

Start forcing a default UI for the device so that manufacturers don't
make us wait for updates to their UIs. Tell the manufacturer's that
they can put their UI on the phones at sale time, but when updates
come out they will have to update or just let the users use the
default UI. Force the manufacturer's to use the Android Market so
that they could provide free updates to users of their handsets and
paid updates to users of competing handsets. For instance one could
buy an HTC phone with SenseUI and get free SenseUI updates while also
pay for the MotoBlur UI in the Market if they choose.

Google should be working with the carriers to update the phones, not
walking away like they don't care and leaving it in the hands of the
carriers and manufacturers. If it's more complicated than that then
you need to start taking a good hard look at your requirements to
license the OS to a manufacturer, because there is something very
wrong.

Another issue is the Market itself. I know one of the selling points
was that the Market was open and free and developers didn't have to
worry about absurd and obscure rules. The Market is well established
now and it's coming under a lot of fire. I'm all for a free and open
environment but at the same time, there are people out there that are
intentionally malicious and that needs to be stopped. FOSS projects
don't let just anyone check in code to the main build without
reviewing it, could you imagine?! The Market has matured enough that
apps submitted need to be seriously reviewed before being available
for general download. I'm a dev myself, and I'm going to tell you
that if I had to pay a small fee to get an app to market I would do so
gladly if I'm going to get support from you in return. What I mean to
say is that if you're having someone take the time to review and
evaluate an application and provide the developer with a fully
detailed report of any bugs/issues and how to reproduce them, then no
one will have a problem paying a small fee for that. Both parties
win, you win because you're getting paid and making the Market a
better, safer place; The dev wins because he is getting an evaluation
report before users downvote the hell out of him if there is a bug.

The Laissez-faire attitude got Android on the map; Now that same
attitude is destroying it. Start taking more control, start taking
responsibility and start caring.
