Although this new behavior may be more realistic I also find it
extremely confusing, especially because this is the default
configuration for the Android 4 AVD. Most tablets and smartphones have
an onscreen keyboard and new developers therefore expect it to appear,
but here it is missing by default. For me it was also not very obvious
how to add it. The trick was to first add the "Keyboard support"
property for the AVD (which will default to "yes") and then set it to
"no" to turn off the physical keyboard, which in turn enables the
virtual keyboard. Also having to choose between being able to see the
onscreen keyboard *or* using the PC keyboard for input is IMHO a major
drawback during development.
