I wouldn't call it tmp/, as that would make me think of Linux and OS X /tmp, which are files that can be deleted without incident. I've used various other directory names for stuff like this (e.g., artwork/, misc/). If assets/ weren't already used by Android for another role, I would probably have settled on that. But I do like having it co-located with the rest of the project files, and in version control, for the same reasons you do.
