My users have seen Market pick up updates when the app was initially
installed without Market.
So yes, it seems possible, although I'm not sure if you can rely on this.
Things to note:
1) Both initial and Market .apks are signed with the same key
2) Same package name (obviously)
3) Same version code sequence
4) The app is free
