Thanks for the help, everyone.... I got it working with PNG files. I missed the obvious answer by missing the one bit of documentation I SHOULD have read... ImageView. Specifically, setAlpha().
So simple. Now I just need to make the image files fairly small (especially for the solid color filters), and scale them up when needed.
