This has never been guaranteed to work, because GPUs may not be able to give access to the frame buffer like that. Even in the cases when it did work, it could be corrupted since there was no control over the state of the frame buffer when reading it.
This is why there is a shell command to do this, which DDMS uses, and is updated appropriately for the platform. Use the shell command. If you are running on 3.0+ and writing system code (which means you are posting to the wrong group anyway) you can use the mechanisms for that... but put this discussion in an appropriate group like android-porting.
