The culprit was this line: > MarginLayoutParams params = new ViewGroup.MarginLayoutParams(50, 50);
since my parent is RelativeLayout, it should like this: RelativeLayout.LayoutParams params = new RelativeLayout.LayoutParams(50, 50); and it all works now. Thanks guys.
