If the device does not provide an option for unmounting the card,
shutting down would seem to be prudent.

So, for example, the Transformer Prime offers a way to unmount a micro
SD card via a Notification, so that is safe and you can leave the
Prime on. However, the XOOM did not (at least through the upgrade to
3.2, and not that I could find), so I always powered down when
ejecting the card.

It's possible that I'm just paranoid.
