I tried all that you suggested except booting in recovery since I don't have one of the old-style SD cards for it. One thing I neglected to mention is that when I plug in the USB cable the G1 gives the notification "USB debugging connnected; A computer is connected to your phone." I wonder if that in itself rules out it being a hardware issue?
