Are you sure that the physical screen on your test devices (not the controller chip) can do 24bpp. There are issues with screen controller chips reporting 24bpp with screens that can only do 16bpp and dithering the results (device manufactures have been know to mislead as well). This is exceptionally hard to check, especially if you suspect issues with higher level software as well.
