I have already done this to confirm my suspicion. Subsequent calls to getMaxZoomLevel will return 22 as opposed to 21, the maximum zoom level.
After having done abit more research, I have found that there is a logged issue : Issue 2761: Satellite view max zoom level one notch above possible<http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2761> Since this was started in 2009, I would have thought that there should be a workaround at least !
