The documentation for ListActivity at http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/app/ListActivity.html has quite a few mistakes in the layout xml. The id attributes are goofed in more than one way and the padding attribute values do not contain the unit of measure.
Hopefully having at least this discussion calling it out will save others noobs from the frustration. Terribly sorry if this has been pointed out many times already.
