You should go with PHP and MySQL. I'd get a virtual server account for $5/month or so. That way someone else has gone thru the fuss of setting it up.
Plus, since PHP is thru the web, you don't have to worry so much about firewalls and such. Plus, you can use phpMyAdmin to make all your databases easily.
