There could be a variety of reasons...

*Are you using Windows or Mac?*
Sometimes there are different steps required to get your device to show up
based on the OS you are using...

*What type of device do you have?*
For some devices, at least on Windows, you need to download drivers from
the Manufacturer before ADB will recognize it.
