If you copy the source code at http://codezone4.wordpress.com/2012/05/17/display-near-by-places-with-google-places-api/ into an HTML file and then view that HTML file as a web page, you get a Google Map showing the locations of stores in a certain part of Sydney, Australia. As you can see, the source code specifies the latitude/longitude coordinates (-33.8665433, 151.1956316), the size of the area to search, and the type of place to search (stores). Yes, this actually works out-of-the-box.
Is there a tutorial that shows how to do a similar task in Android?
