It seems to me that a managed consumable item is a more versatile unmanaged 
item than using unmanaged items in v3, but I have not dealt with unmanaged 
items much myself.  

Actually, I have wondered the same thing about subscriptions. Is a 
subscription just a consumable managed item, that you then consider 
consumed at the end of the specified period? Well, not quite, because you 
don't get recurring billing. And its not something I would do if 
subscriptions in v3 are somewhere just around the corner.
