It looks like the described approach in your linked article is the way to go. So what exactly does not work? Did you get some compile or runtime error? If you are targeting rooted devices you could sum up file sizes by going through an app's directories. There are common locations for APKs, database and shared preference files, then you need to look up the internal and external storage directories of the app.
