I've had reports from users that side-loaded apps will update through Play..... (and reports of it occasionally not happening for some, although they seem to be in a minority).
It's not necessary to rely on it though, and one could build an independent update notification mechanism. Now, license checks using the LVL won't work for side-loaded apps, of course, so a different solution is needed.
