Found the problem (thanks to +Harry Y )
The default library project that Gradle created, it created a duplicate
string app_name in the strings.xml, (which is referenced in the manifest).
Both the app and the library had this same boilerplate string defintion.
Going into the library project and changed it to lib_name in the manifest
and strings.xml and everything is now working again.
