I had a similar problem with my XP machine resolving names. The
solution on my system was to "disable" the Ethernet and not just
"disconnect" it.

But here's a quick test to see if that is your system's problem...

Open a DOS Command prompt and see if you can "nslookup" or "ping" a
hostname...

C:\> nslookup google.com <Enter>

...for example.

If this fails to return a valid IP, then my solution (above) may be
what you need.
