Thank you all. I did get it to compile with multidex support library if I updated to a new copy of Eclipse and installed the ADT from zip file.
For all stripping of Google Play, though, it appears we are left to our own creativity with the solutions mentioned here. I don't think I will use all of it, but once I've gone through the pain of adding Google Play I may be tempted to throw in several.
