You should store your maps api key safely & securely for future reference, 
offsite backup copies or version control is a good approach, at a minimum 
email it to yourself. However you don't really need to keep it a secret per 
se as it only works with your secret digital certificate app signing key 
(which should be kept secret, safe & secure).
