*Sr. DBA Consultant (Oracle to Postgres) *
*Location: **Remote*
*6months+*
*Project description:*
- Our client currently has a very large backlog of project that they
need help with.
- *The projects are primarily migrations from Oracle to Postgres.*
- The other projects include performing health checks on Postgres,
testing Postgres and upgrading Postgres.
- A normal project team includes a Solutions Architect and a Senior
Database Consultant.
- Currently they are down 3 Senior Database consultants.
- These consultants will perform much of the technical work tied to
these migrations and projects.
- Each contractor that joins the team will be put through a technical
training on our clients' products and their process. This training will
provide an overview on how they handle these types of projects.
- The Senior Consultants are expected to be 70% billable with their time
and the remaining 30% will be non-billable.
*Technology environment the consultant will be working in:*
- Application development languages, databases, tools, networking,
platforms.
*Consultants' day to day responsibilities:*
- Evaluate customer deployments of Postgres, and associated tools, and
make recommendations on how to improve them and document the required
technical steps.
- Assist with the development of Professional Services proposals
- Use C, C++, PHP, Python, Java and Ruby to guide customers in the
development of custom Postgres-based applications.
- Perform database Migrations from Oracle, SQL Server, and / or MySQL to
PostgreSQL.
- Performance tuning for existing database deployments
- Upgrading customer's application to the latest version of Postgres and
configure / change their application to take advantage of new features.
- Set up High Availability configurations using PostgreSQL.
- Evaluate security needs by customer.
- Document all work clearly and concisely in runbooks and customer
communications.
- Implement backup strategies, perform upgrades and patching.
- Develop architectures to migrate data and entire databases; implement
and deliver on the architecture migrating databases.
*Required skills:*
- Prior experience working for a Services firm (client would like 5
years)
- Ex - Being able to explain to an end client what the ramifications
are of upgrading from 9 to 13.
- DBA level experience for PostgreSQL (client would like 5 years)
- Experience with recent versions – most recent version is 13.
- Using C, C++, PHP, Python, Java and Ruby in the development of
custom Postgres-based applications
- Setting up High Availability configurations using PostgreSQL
- Performance tuning for existing database deployments
- Performing database Migrations from Oracle, SQL Server, and / or MySQL
to PostgreSQL
- Developing architectures to migrate data and entire databases;
implement and deliver on the architecture migrating databases.
- Experience with database upgrades. They are doing a lot of 9.x to
11,12, 13 upgrades.
- Database design and building applications for PostgreSQL, Oracle, or
other databases.
- Replication experience, replication manager
- Partitioning experience
- System administration and performance skills for Linux, (Ubuntu,
Centos, Redhat, or Debian), including facility with scripting. Redhat
preferred.
*Desired Skills:*
- Proficient with PostgreSQL community version and EDB's or 2ndQuadrants
commercial version installation and configuration
- Proficient with PostgreSQL/EPAS tools
- Proficient with database tuning and use of PostgreSQL tools such as
PgBadger, EDB's PgStatsPack, EDB's DRITA
- Proficient with PostgreSQL replication technologies Binary Streaming
Replication, EDB's xDB Replication, Logical Replication via Slony, Londiste
- Proficient with PostgreSQL architecture
- Proficient with PostgreSQL networking, HBA and connection pooling
(PgBouncer, PgPool) Working knowledge of OLTP/DSS/DW system design.
- Working knowledge of scripting languages, BASH, KSH, Python, Perl, etc.
