The good news is, it absolutely is extendable. (I -believe- you can even write one as a standard app to install.) The bad news is, the only people who have examples or implementations are google - all the IM providers so far are closed source. There was talk that this was medium/high priority fix (a simple stub-out example) but that was almost 6 months ago, so..
