Accelerometer does work under screen lock when the power is not dimmed. We debugged it in ddms on the real g1 device.
Guess, if you can acquire a Power wake Lock, you should be able to read acceleration. We have not tried to acquire it in program, just manually. This was done on current android version, not cupcake release.
