I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell Inspiron 600m with 512MB of RAM, and
I'm dying to get into developing some Android apps, but I've hit a bit
of a roadblock.

I have installed Eclipse 3.4 and installed the 1.5 SDK and the
Developer Tools with no problem. I created a standard 1.5 AVD, but
when I try to run the emulator it just won't get anywhere.

It doesn't give me any error messages, but it won't get past the
animated startup screen. I have let it run for as long as 20 or 30
minutes, but it just won't finish the boot process. I tried to just
leave it running and forget about it for a while, but when I came back
to my computer, it had shut itself down -- I assume because the CPU
overheated. I've tried renicing the emulator to +1, and that at least
keeps the CPU temperature to a healthy level, but at that rate I have
no idea how long it will take to boot.

Now, I know my machine is hardly cutting edge -- it's about 5 years
old. But it's not exactly a dog, either. I know that running a QEMU
virtual machine requires some substantial resources, so I expected
things to be a bit slow, but I figured it should be able to at least
run.

Am I expecting too much from my old machine? Is this hopeless? I
expect to be able to get a new system in a few months, but I really
don't want to wait that long to get started. At the very least, I
would like to start learning the framework and APIs, even if it will
be slow going.

Anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone else out there gotten the
emulator to run (even if it's slow) on an older system?

Thanks for any help you can offer.
