I think that is based on Dr. Heinz' original article (newsletter #15). He revised it for Java5 in newsletter #98: http://www.javaspecialists.eu/archive/Issue098.html A quick read of #98 suggests there are some memory leaks in his implementation of #15, so you might want to double-check which one yours is based upon.
