I found the solution: the FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP flag has to be
added to the intent
E.g.
Intent intent = new Intent(this, "your home
screen class");
intent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP);
startActivity(intent);
