Hi Andrew, I prefer to work with a Linux like environment. The Mac and Ubuntu environment is pretty good for Android development. If you also work on framework level and have to build a complete platform build then Ubuntu and Mac should be preferred. Windows might be fine for application development and of course you can run Cygwin but why not right away going for Ubuntu or Mac.
If you don't want to spend money on a Mac book then consider to run VMplayer with a Ubuntu.iso image. On one of my machines I have this setup and it is pretty fast.
