Looking at SQLiteDatabase's locking, better to bypass execSQL():

public int executeUpdate(String sql) throws SQLException {
    lock();
    try {
        native_execSQL(sql);
        return (int) lastChangeCount();
    } catch (SQLiteDatabaseCorruptException e) {
        onCorruption();
        throw e;
    } finally {
        unlock();
    }
}
