Are you talking about the camera hardware-resource?
If that's the case, you really should release the camera when the
activity's onPause is called.

Do a good read of the Activity's lifecycle on developer.android.com.
It's only guaranteed the activity's onPause is called. When a process
is killed, it is not guaranteed that any of its activities' onStop/
onDestroy methods are called.
