I would agree with the previous post - the early demo video on the HTC Magic of using a circular motion for zooming looked even more useful than pinching, since it can be done more easily with a single hand on the phone. It doesn't appear to have made it to the initial releas of the phone, but may still come in a future update. The usage looked like this:
Double-tap screen displays a gray circle overlay with a button on the circle. CW circle motion = Zoom In, CCW circle motion = Zoom Out.
