I put the following menu option in my application to display the
keyboard:

            case R.id.keyboard:
                Toast.makeText(this, "Back button removes keyboard.",
Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
                InputMethodManager imm = (InputMethodManager)getSystemService
(Context.INPUT_METHOD_SERVICE);
                imm.showSoftInput(mListView, InputMethodManager.SHOW_FORCED);
                return true;
