Try to implement a service which is responsible for the data connectivity. You want to make sure that you acquire a CPU wake lock, that you are able to process the incoming data in your service.
Also check out the Wifi wake lock (http://developer.android.com/ reference/android/net/wifi/WifiManager.WifiLock.html) You can check the status of your Wifi connection using a broadcast receiver.
